Somatic Therapy and Nervous System Support.

Somatic therapy is a gentle, body-aware approach to counselling that helps with anxiety, stress, burnout, overwhelm, and emotional regulation by working with both the mind and nervous system. Available online across Australia and in person on Sydney's Northern Beaches.

When stress lives in the body..

Sometimes you can understand what is happening logically, but still feel anxious, activated, shut down, restless, exhausted, or unable to settle. Stress, trauma, and overwhelm often live not only in the mind, but also in the body and nervous system. When the brain has learned to respond to life through threat, protection, or survival, those responses can become automatic and unconscious over time. Even when you want to feel calm, connected, or safe, your system may still be reacting as though danger is present.

Somatic therapy is a body-aware approach to counselling that helps you gently notice and work with these patterns. By supporting nervous system regulation and bringing awareness to how stress and emotion are held in the body, somatic therapy can help soften long-held threat responses and create more space for steadiness, ease, and connection. In this way, change is not only talked about - it is experienced and integrated more deeply.

My somatic and integrative approach

If of interest to you, I integrate somatic therapy into counselling to support deeper awareness of how stress, emotions, and protective patterns may be showing up in your body and nervous system.

Where appropriate, I may also use kinesiology and muscle testing when someone feels particularly stuck, unclear, or disconnected from what they are feeling or what may be contributing to their stress. This can offer another gentle way of exploring what is happening beneath the surface when words alone do not feel like enough.

My work also draws from CBT, ACT, solution-focused approaches, attachment understanding, and circle of security.

What nervous system support means

Nervous system support in counselling means paying attention to how your body responds to stress, overwhelm, and emotional load. Together, we can work with patterns such as activation, shutdown, tension, emotional flooding, or difficulty settling, with the aim of helping you build more awareness, regulation, and steadiness over time.
